The growth of the use of Medical Assistants and other Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) is a trend in our society. Unlicensed individuals are now performing procedures that have traditionally required a license.
This 12-hour Peripheral IV Qualification Program is specifically designed to provide Medical Assistants and other Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) with IV therapy instruction proven to achieve quality IV practice, improve patient/client outcomes and prevent liability risks. It is approved by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and satisfies the IV training requirement for their IV Microcredential. Included in this program is an online video presentation given by Kay Coulter, CRNI, VA-BC, followed by a 1-day hands-on simulated IV skills practice workshop, a quiz to ascertain your comprehension of the material, and a printable workbook.
Course Content Includes:
- Current standards and guidelines that apply to the delivery of IV therapy
- Negligence and how it relates to IV therapy practice in healthcare
- Identification of the main peripheral veins available for the insertion of a peripheral IV catheter
- Methods of proper vein assessment
- Accepted methods to prepare the skin prior to IV catheter insertion
- Step-by-step review of proper IV catheter insertion / discontinuation procedural steps
- Special considerations for IV therapy delivery to pediatric and geriatric patients
- Potential complications and recommended interventions
- Video demonstration of a live peripheral IV catheter insertion and discontinuation
The IV Skills Practice Workshop will provide in-person, hands-on simulated training from a nationally certified instructor. There will be a question and answer session related to the online content, a discussion related to Medical Assistant Scope of Practice and State regulations as they apply to IV practice, a peripheral IV catheter insertion and discontinuation procedure demonstration, hands-on practice of proper insertion technique, emphasizing how to locate veins, proper tourniquet application and skin prep, quick entry into the skin to diminish discomfort, aseptic thread of the IV catheter, and proper dressing application. Tips and ticks for successful IV insertion with challenging patients will be also be discussed. The participant will gain hands-on, one-on-one, simulated IV insertion practice with instructor prompting/guidance given to redirect technique for successful vein and IV catheter advancement. The participant will receive a detailed skills validation checklist for each simulated insertion attempt.

The practice of IV therapy must be performed according to an individual’s State scope of practice for their discipline and/or level of licensure. It is the responsibility of each participant to maintain his or her level of proficiency on an annual basis.
